LETTER: Calgarian familiar with Okotoks parking woes

Local governments are allowing developers to build multi-storey units with absolutely no regards to parking.

Dear Editor,

Re: D’Arcy residents seek solution for parking woes, March 12

I read with great interest the parking issues of your residents in the D'Arcy Ranch district.

I know all too well the problems these developers cause and the no consideration or caring for people living in these areas. They only care about filling their bank accounts.

Our council (City of Calgary) has allowed the destruction of all districts with the developers building these multi-storey units with absolutely no regards to parking.

My own street has become a nightmare. We are prisoners in our own homes, afraid to leave for any reason, knowing there is a very real possibility there will be nowhere to park when we return.

Upon calls to the city, concerns fall on deaf ears, and we were actually told if there is nowhere to park, park at the mall and walk home.

Developers are only required to provide one spot per unit, and in today's age, that is so unrealistic as most families have multiple vehicles. When children are of driving age, more often than not they have their own vehicles, which adds to the problem.

My heart goes out to these people, their quality of life destroyed and the quiet enjoyment of their properties ruined.

It is so obvious that the developers are in the back pockets of the politicians, otherwise this would have never happened. I am so sorry you have to live like this, it is happening everywhere, and no one cares. You live in total fear that when you return home there is a very good chance you will not have the privilege or right to park at your own house.

Okotoks, please pay attention to your citizens, it is a right they have earned, and should not be taken away. We all deserve better.

Okotoks City Council couldn’t care less about parking or infrastructure.
Nothing regarding roads have changed in 30 years except more stop lights.
The road system here is famous for being an example of how NOT to do things.

Also seems like every time they build one of these four story buildings they put in another set of lights
Not sure who the planner is but a total joke 6 sets of lights in just over a mile

Add to that the ridiculous bylaw that says you cannot park a work truck (cube van) on the street in front of your house. We found that out by a lovely neighbor (we know who you are) calling bylaw on us because we parked a work truck in front of our house. But apparently, it's a thing. But only a thing if someone complains to the police. Not sure what a person is supposed to do. Agreed with council being tossed out, along with whoever is in charge of infrastructure and planning.
