Basketball season tips off this week in Okotoks

Knights Classic goes Nov. 29-30 at Holy Trinity Academy.

High school basketball season has arrived in the Foothills.

Both exhibition and tournament play return to the hardcourt this week highlighted by the annual Knights Classic senior girls basketball tournament on Nov. 29-30 at Holy Trinity Academy.

HTA was the silver medallists at last year’s tournament and boast a strong roster of returning players for the 2024-25 season.

This year’s eight-team competition features Chestermere, Bishop O’Byrne, Bert Church, George McDougall, Sir Winston Churchill, Brooks and defending champion Notre Dame.

HTA opens the Classic on Friday at 1:15 p.m. versus Chestermere. The bronze and gold medal games go at 5:15 p.m. and 7 p.m., respectively, on Saturday.

Once again this season, the Knights, Foothills Falcons and Strathmore Spartans will be playing in a mini-league with an exhibition schedule.

The three teams are no longer part of the Foothills Athletic Council, which now features teams exclusively at the 3A and 2A levels, including the Oilfields Drillers, Strathcona-Tweedsmuir Spartans, Highwood Mustangs and Notre Dame Collegiate Timberwolves.

The Falcons girls and boys open the exhibition slate versus William Aberhart on Nov. 26, starting at 5:30 p.m. at the Comp. The Falcons boys are in Edmonton for the annual St. FX tournament from Nov. 28-30.
