First-place Okotoks Bow Mark Oilers making early mark

AEHL team tops U18 AAA ranks with 24 points in 16 games

The Okotoks Bow Mark Oilers are hanging tough atop the Alberta Elite Hockey League standings.

Okotoks (12-4), led by new bench boss Mark Pederson, has amassed a league-best 24 points through the first 16 games of the U18 AAA season with eight wins in its past 10 games.

In a battle for top spot in the South Division on Sunday, Okotoks eclipsed the Calgary Northstars in a 6-5 barnburner at the Viking Rentals Centre.

Kaden Hayes paced the offence with two goals with Grady Pichette, Ayaan Vira, Adam Halat and Jake Rogers adding the other markers.

Earlier in the weekend, Okotoks saw its six-game winning streak snapped in a 3-2 loss to the visiting Edmonton Oilers Orange. Carter Kelly had both Oilers goals.

Halat, a 2009-born forward from Chestermere, leads the province with 24 points (10 goals, 14 assists) in his first year in the league.

In goal, the tandem of Steele Bass and Nate Gillis are both among the leading netminders in the province with save percentages of .923 and .922, respectively.

In league action, Okotoks is in the Stampede City to battle the Calgary Flames on Nov. 30 with its next home date on Dec. 1 against the LJAC Wilhauk Jerky Oil Kings at 4:15 p.m.

Next month, Okotoks will compete in the 2024-25 Circle K Classic, formerly known as the Mac’s Tournament, held Dec. 27-Jan. 1 in Calgary
