If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.
Cavalry FC’s pre-season roster is taking shape with 21 players from last year’s Canadian Premier League championship squad retained for the 2025 season as of mid-January.
Earlier in the week, Cavalry announced forward Jay Herdman will return next season following a strong end to the 2024 campaign on loan from the Vancouver Whitecaps.
“Jay was an important addition to our run-in last season and made an instant impact,” said Cavalry FC head coach and GM Tommy Wheeldon Jr., in a team release. “He is a player that is very shifty and able to find or create space, as well as possesses a terrific competitive edge that suits our DNA.”
Returning on club option contracts exercised for this season are key winger Ali Musse, midfield workhorse Shamit Shome, right back Michael Harms and goalkeeper Joseph Holliday.
In addition to the options being picked up, the club announced new agreements with six incumbents.
Versatile defender Bradley Kamdem has signed a contract extension through to 2027, centreback Callum Montgomery put pen to paper on a deal through 2026 with fellow defender Tom Field and midfielder Jesse Daley signed through next season with an option for 2026.
Attacking midfielder Maël Henry re-upped through 2026 with Niko Myroniuk re-signing through 2025 with extended club options for both players.
As part of the same release, Cavalry FC said the club did not pick up the 2025 option on striker Malcolm Shaw, who played just one season with the squad.
Cavalry FC gets back on the pitch next month with the opening round of the Concacaf Champions Cup kicking off. Cavalry has drawn Liga MX powerhouse Pumas UNAM in the two-leg fixture.
Cavalry’s home game will be played at Starlight Stadium on Vancouver Island on Feb. 6 with the return leg held Feb. 13 in Mexico City.
