It’s proving to be quite the dash to the final at the Cowboys Rangeland Derby.

High River chuckwagon driver Jason Glass earned day money for the second time at the Calgary Stampede’s Rangeland Derby, this time breaking a track record as the first to cross the finish line under 70 seconds at the Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth.

Glass’ time of 1:09.45 on Thursday, July 11 edged Troy Dorchester and Rae Croteau Jr. for the top three on the night. The performance vaulted the High Riverite back into the top-three, sitting second behind Chad Fike and ahead of Chanse Vigen.

The top-three in the aggregate through Saturday advance to the championship heat at the Rangeland Derby. Glass won the title in 2013.

Foothills County’s Dayton Sutherland is 16th in the standings with Blackie’s Jordie Fike in 21st.

In rodeo action, Pool C kicked off on Thursday.

Okotoks steer wrestler Harley Cole had a quick start with a third place finish, in 4.7 seconds, with two more days to earn a top-four finish and with that a guaranteed spot in Sunday’s final.

Earlier in the week, Millarville saddle bronc rider Layton Green advanced to the final along with High River’s Lucas Macza, who qualified second out of Pool B.

Longview barrel racer Bradi Whiteside finished second in the Rocky Mountain Cup’s Breakaway Roping event on July 9.
