Knight time arrives this weekend for Okotoks high school basketball.
The Knights Classic senior girls basketball tournament brings eight teams to the hardcourt at Holy Trinity Academy on Dec. 1-2.
The draw includes the host Knights, the Oilfields Drillers, Notre Dame, George McDougall, Sir Winston Churchill, Catholic Central, Bowness and Bert Church.
HTA and Bert Church open proceedings on Dec. 1 at 1:15 p.m.
The playoff round continues with semifinals at 10:15 a.m. and noon on Saturday, Dec. 1 with the bronze medal and gold medal games to follow at 5:15 and 7 p.m.
The high school basketball scene will see some dramatic changes during the 2023-24 season.
The Knights, along with the Strathmore Spartans, will not be playing in the Foothills Athletic Council in both senior and JV. The Foothills Falcons senior teams have been out of the league and playing a tournament and exhibition game schedule for a few seasons now.
The FAC basketball league will continue with the Drillers, Strathcona-Tweedsmuir Spartans, the Highwood Mustangs and Notre Dame Collegiate Timberwolves out of High River and Strathmore’s Holy Cross-Collegiate.
The move is expected to improve the competitive balance in the league with the smaller 2A and 3A schools no longer going toe-to-toe with their 4A counterparts.
