Is the Smith government doing enough to get oil and gas companies to cover their unpaid taxes?

Sir, with all due respect, no one on this survey said they didn’t appreciate what the Oil & Gas companies did for not only our Province, but our Country too. However, no one benefits nor appreciates when any individual or corporation shirks their legal obligations to the detriment of our taxpayers, municipalities, provinces and Canada. Corporate welfare is not our responsibility or a mandate to get an Oil & gas permit. Anyone who thinks it’s ok to give oil & Gas companies the thumbs up to neglecting to pay their taxes, needs to realize that those outstanding taxes could also be a contributing factor to shortfalls in funding for such things as healthcare & education. Born and raised in Alberta, pro Alberta Beef, Oil & Gas, and gun ownership! But, if you come and dump on my Alberta property, I expect you to pay up and clean up your mess, plain and simple.

Just watched smith on CBC she said Municipality’s need to call the Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) as soon as any Oil & Gas company stops paying their municipality taxes; and then the AER is supposed to call those defaulting companies and tell them to pay their taxes or their permits to drill will be withdrawn. What she fails to solve is how does anybody force these companies to pay up when they have already left the municipality? Maybe AER should just publicize the names of those in default companies and if those companies are still in business their next permit request is denied until they pay up any outstanding tax debts.

Municipalities should never be put in the position of taxing their residents more because Smith has failed to hold Oil & Gas companies accountable for their unpaid tax debts. Smith is also attempting to interfere with Municipalities efforts to negotiate directly with the Federal Government on grants etc. The EPA is also shirking their responsibility to hold Oil &Gas Companies in reclamation which also puts pressure on rural Municipalities to deal with those abandoned Oil & Gas wells. I compared property taxes in Edmonton vs Diamond Valley and I found that similar lot with house was significantly higher with less services in Diamond Valley. If Smith has no backbone to put pressure on Oil & Gas then she needs to support rural municipalities just like she does hockey venues with the public purse. If nothing changes to support our rural municipalities there is always another election on the horizon.

Does Mark Carney’s victory change the way you’ll vote in the next election?

I have more questions! Why didn’t he disclose his financial holdings as per election rules? He uses the phrase: “end consumer carbon tax”; but any carbon tax (consumer or otherwise) that remains ultimately gets passed onto consumers. Will he be a better adversary against lunatic donald is unclear; unless every Premier gets on board, his efforts will be muted.

Has the trade war impacted your travel plans?

Canadian’s refusal to travel anywhere in the US is a wise tactical strategy to voice an opinion against tariffs. It sends a message to the US—we are not bullies with a large army; however, Canadians get a bigger bang for their buck travelling in Canada.

What grade do you give the new provincial budget?

The 2025 Alberta budget cuts funding for the Assured Income for the Severely Handicapped (AISH) program by $49 million in 2025. Is this type of budget we should be proud of? It appears to be a shell game of moving funds from sick and handicapped Albertans to fiancé the tax cuts Smith promised in her election.
