The Foothills is home to many community events and festivals, but there’s one, according to Western Wheel readers, that stands above the rest.

Light Up Okotoks, which ushers in the holiday season in Olde Towne every November, was chosen as Favourite Community Event in this year’s Readers’ Choice Awards.

The magical evening that many say is right out of a Hallmark movie, Light Up proves popular with all ages thanks to its non-stop seasonal merriment, highlighted by the lighting of the community Christmas tree in Olde Towne Plaza and capped off by a fireworks display.

Light Up Okotoks has been the town’s festive kickoff to the holiday season for over three decades.

According to the Town of Okotoks, which stages the iconic event, the goal of Light Up is to simply bring the community together. To do so, the Town closes two kilometres of downtown streets to allow neighbours, friends and families to gather and enjoy all the holiday cheer.

Every year the event zone along Elizabeth Street/McRae Street is packed with activities and entertainment, including wagon rides, fire dancers, photos with Santa, ice sculptures, roving entertainers, fire pits and much more, all set against a backdrop of twinkling holiday lights.

Light Up Okotoks continues to grow every year and the Town says 2024 promises to be another extraordinary celebration. This year’s festival will be held on Friday, Nov. 22.
