Diamond Valley Fire Rescue and other emergency crews respond to a crash last month on Highway 7 near Diamond Valley. The fire department is asking drivers to slow down when passing accident scenes.

Diamond Valley Fire Rescue says failing to slow down for emergency workers puts lives at risk.

While responding to a morning collision on Highway 7 on Jan. 23, numerous drivers sped through the scene while emergency crews were working, the fire department said.

"This disgusting driving behaviour risks the lives of emergency responders," they said.

By law in Alberta, drivers are required to slow down or move over when passing stopped vehicles with flashing lights, like emergency vehicles, tow trucks or maintenance vehicles.

The law protects roadside workers and gives them room to work, the fire department said.

According to the law, when driving in the closest lane to any vehicle that is stopped with flashing lights activated, drivers must move over to the far lane.

If drivers can't move over, they must slow down to 60 km/h, or go the posted speed limit if it is lower than 60 km/h.
