The Alberta High School of Fine Arts jazz band, which will perform at Sweet Showcase, performs at the Foothills Composite High School and Alberta High School of Fine Arts commencement ceremony on May 16, 2024.

Youth arts will be in the spotlight at an upcoming event in Okotoks.

The annual Alberta High School of Fine Arts Sweet Showcase on Thursday, Oct. 24 will feature a performance night for the school's vocal ensemble and band, followed by a sneak peek of the school's musical production of Mamma Mia.

This will be the third annual Sweet Showcase, and theatre director Jessica Kelly aims for this year's event to be bigger than ever.

"Every year we've outdone ourselves and that's our goal again this year: to engage more and more of the community, fill our gym with people from the Okotoks area that want to support fine arts for our young people," said Kelly.

The theatre preview portion of the showcase will feature three musical numbers from the school's upcoming production of Mamma Mia, which is set to run from Dec. 10 to 14.

The school's visual artists will also be in the spotlight, with student artwork on display in addition to an auction of live artwork by art teacher Shauna Kelly.

The live art isn't the only creation up for auction: cakes donated by community members and local businesses will also be auctioned off.

"It's a great fundraiser, it's high energy, it's a super fun night," added Kelly.

Funds raised will support the Alberta High School of Fine Arts Society and its various initiatives, including providing scholarships and bursaries for young artists.

Learn more on the Alberta High School of Fine Arts Society Facebook page.

The event kicks off at 6:30 p.m. in the Foothills Composite High School gym. Entry is free and all ages are welcome.
