An Okotoks mom is organizing a concert to help another family in need.
In an effort to help the Byerley family, whose son Kolton has been diagnosed with terminal cancer, Sandy Grunleitner has organized a concert on Saturday, Oct. 21 at 5 p.m. at the Okotoks Elks Hall.
As the family looks to spend as much time with their son as possible, community members are coming together to help make that happen.
“All the money goes to straight to them in hopes that they can live Kolton's bucket list,” Grunleitner said. “I also heard he needs insurance to be able to come back right away if needed, and it’s crazy expensive.
“So we’re hoping if we can just make it happen that they can check one big item off the bucket list, that will be amazing."
Queued up for the evening is Grunleitner’s son Dave and his musical persona Vicarious Vandalism, joined by Gratuitous, originating from High River, and Okotoks singer/songwriter Michela Sheedy.
They needed a stage though, and the Okotoks Elks came through in a big way.
“I needed a venue, so I reached out to the Elks,” Grunleitner said. “So I went and I spoke in front of the board and the Elks decided to donate the space for the event.”
They didn’t stop there, offering their main event hall for the concert, the lounge to provide adults liquor service, and the adjoining Heritage Hall for the silent auction.
There are also a number of items being donated for a silent auction, and Grunleitner is welcoming more through the Facebook page she set up for the event under Fill Kolton’s Bucket Fundraiser Gig.
“I just felt like I wanted to do something, because Rae-Lynn, his mom, told me Kolton wants to do things with his family, and being small business owners, they cannot just take time off and go places whenever without jeopardizing being able to pay bills,” Grunleitner said.
Tickets are $20 and can be purchased at EventBrite.ca under ‘Fill Koltons Bucket Fundraiser’.
