'Mamma Mia!' musical bringing 'so much nostalgia' to Okotoks

The music of ABBA comes to life at the Foothills Composite/Alberta High School of Fine Arts from Dec. 10 to 14.

Mamma mia, here I go again!

Expect that and plenty more pop hits during the Foothills Composite/Alberta High School of Fine Arts' funky production of beloved musical Mamma Mia!, opening Dec. 10.

"It's super high-energy, very catchy songs, so much nostalgia," said director Jessica Kelly. "Whether it's ABBA songs that you forgot you even knew or costuming that you forgot existed, it's very nostalgic and I think audiences are going to fight the urge to sing along during our show."

The play, which was previewed at the school's third annual Sweet Showcase in October, follows 20-year-old Sophie's search for her father, with plenty of iconic musical numbers along the way, including Super Trouper, Dancing Queen and the iconic titular song, in addition to dancing choreographed with the help of Okotoks-based Alberta Dance and Drama Academy.

It's an ambitious production, with over 60 student cast and crew members involved.

"It's been a really positive experience for me this semester working with students that really care about the work they're doing and that are excited to put on the musical," said Kelly.

One such student is Grade 12 Fletcher Martin, one of the play's lead actors.

"We just love the aesthetic and the whole vibe of it all," said Martin. "It's one of the highest-selling musicals and has brought so much attention to just what a musical is."

Martin encourages guests to show up in style.

"I highly encourage people, if you're coming to watch this show, you have to show up in a funky outfit," he said. "Wear your clothes that you haven't worn for a little while that you just love, because it's just so much fun to embrace it all, just get into it and just have a moment to just get away from the real world."

Mamma Mia! runs from Dec. 10 to 14 for a total of six shows in the Foothills Composite High School theatre. Shows start at 7 p.m. in addition to a 2 p.m. matinee on Saturday, Dec. 14.

Tickets are available on Eventbrite.
