Shakespearean tragedy meets farce comedy at Oilfields

'Macbeth: The Curse Unleashed' comes to Diamond Valley for four shows from Dec. 12 to 14.

Oilfields High School will soon be staging a hilarious tragedy.

Macbeth: The Curse Unleashed comes to life in Diamond Valley from Dec. 12 to 14.

The play follows a theatre troupe putting on a production of Shakespeare's Macbeth, with the actors and crew attempting to pull off the tragedy while hilarious gaffes ensue.

"It's a twisted version of Macbeth. I'm going to have to rebuild the set after I'm done every night," said drama teacher Pam Pracic.

The concept of the play stems from the famous centuries-old superstition that theatrical productions of Macbeth are prone to bad luck and failure.

"Macbeth is notoriously a cursed play, and often any any theatre company that puts Macbeth on, something always goes wrong with the show," explained Pracic. "So what I've done is I've taken the script, modernized it, adapted it for our stage, and then cursed it with all the things that could possibly go wrong in a play production."

Dubbing the play a "melodrama comedy," Pracic considers Macbeth: The Curse Unleashed the most tech-heavy show the school has produced.

The titular Scottish noble is played by Grade 12 Corbin Wiebe, who has been involved with Oilfields drama since Grade 9.

"I've always been intrigued by Shakespeare's plays, so learning that we were doing a play by him, I thought was absolutely amazing and would be really fun to pull off," said Wiebe.

"It has a whole lot of drama involved with it, some comedy that we like to throw in there as well, just good old classic Oilfields play production."

The play will be performed from Dec. 12 to 14. The shows start at 7 p.m. in the Oilfields High School theatre, with a matinee on Dec. 12 at 2 p.m.

Tickets are available online, a first for Oilfields High School, in addition to cash at the door.
