The Okotoks elementary school held a service for Remembrance Day and National Indigenous Veterans Day on Nov. 8.

Community members joined hundreds of students at St. Mary's School in Okotoks for a service commemorating Remembrance Day and National Indigenous Veterans Day on Nov. 8.

Following the playing of The Last Post and the Reveille, along with prayers and a moment of silence, audience members heard from two members of the Canadian Armed Forces: Sailor 2nd Class Janice Blasius and former combat medic James Grant.

"The purpose of the Last Post prior to the moment of silence is to welcome the fallen, their spirits, their angels to come and enjoy the service with you, have them present with you so you're not alone," said Grant.

He and Blasius took questions from students on different aspects of their military experiences.

"The little things do matter," reflected Blasius, who is 13th-generation military and third-generation Canadian military.
