Man flown to hospital following shooting in Okotoks

One person is in custody following an incident in Okotoks this afternoon.

One person is in custody, and another was taken to hospital by STARS with a gunshot wound, following an incident in Okotoks this afternoon.

Okotoks RCMP were dispatched to a possible shooting on Sheep River Court at around 3 p.m. on May 1, police said in a press release.

A 53 year old male was found with a gunshot wound and was flown to a Calgary hospital by STARS in serious but stable condition, RCMP said.

Police took a 26 year old male into custody at the scene and charges are pending, police said.

Mounties said it was an isolated incident and there is no threat to the public. Police will remain in the area during their investigation.

Shortly after the 911 call, about half a dozen RCMP vehicles and other first responders were in the area.

Duane Ward, a neighbour, said he called police after hearing somebody calling for help outside of a home.

“I could clearly hear, ‘Help, help, I’ve been shot,’” Ward said.

He said he went outside to find a man collapsed on the front step of a house down the street.

“I phoned 911,” Ward said. “I just tried to calm the guy down and said the police are on their way.”

He said the area is a tight-knit, quiet community.

“All of us know each other,” he said. “We don’t have this stuff happening over here.”
