LETTER: Fast-food service better without students

Service is night to day better now than when younger Canadians worked, or hung out, at fast-food restaurants.

Dear Editor,

Re: Locals shouldn’t lose hours to temporary foreign workers, Jan. 8

I agree that locals should not lose hours to temporary foreign workers, but, and this is a big but, Canadians should actually be required to work the job.

As a senior, I can remember way back when our local fast-food outlets were staffed and managed by Canadians. It was mostly part-time seniors that worked during the day and students that worked afternoons and on weekends.

The restaurant owners complained they could not fill enough positions with seniors who usually only wanted a bit of part-time and had to rely on young people who, for the most part, only wanted to be paid for hanging with their friends in a social, semi-work environment.

Often, without notice, they did not show for a shift. After getting fired, you could often find the same groups working at another fast-food place down the road. During this time, restaurants were messy and service was poor in spite of seeming to have lots of staff.

Now, I can't tell if those restaurants employ temporary foreign workers or new Canadians, but I can tell you the service is night to day better than when younger Canadians worked or hung out there.
